The surficial aquifer system of Segment 5 contains one major and three minor alluvial aquifers, of which the Mississippi River Valley alluvial aquifer is the largest and most important. Some regional studies have included the Mississippi River Valley alluvial aquifer as part of the Mississippi embayment aquifer system.The simple aquifer shown in Figure 6 is termed an unconfined aquifer because the aquifer formation extends essentially to the land surface. As a result, the aquifer is in pressure communication with the atmosphere. Unconfined aquifers are also known as water table aquifers because the water table marks the top of the groundwater system.
